Super Foods !!!
It's true! These "super foods" are nutrient-dense and have
many added health benefits. Try adding just a few to your daily diet!
Dark, leafy greens - Nature's powerhouse! Popeye was right!
Spinach, as well as other leafy greens like chicory, kale, swiss
chard,... even broccoli!... are all high in fiber and densely packed
with nutrients like calcium, iron, magnesium, Vitamin A, Vitamin
C, Vitamin B6, and folate, as well as other cancer-fighting anti-oxidants.
Legumes - Another one of nature's powerhouse foods, legumes include
dry beans, lentils, soy products, and lima beans. They are an excellent
source of fiber and protein, but low in fat and total calories. They
are also full of nutrients including iron, potassium, magnesium, and
folate.
Berries - Deliciously sweet, berries are an excellent source
of cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber, and have some of nature's
highest concentrations of Vitamin C and many other cancer-fighting anti-oxidants. Fish - Salmon, in particular, is an excellent source of quality
protein and a rich source of heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids.
Nuts - Almonds and walnuts are a good source of protein and have
a favorable fat profile (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) that
can help reduce total cholesterol levels. They are also a good source
of iron and, in the case of almonds, Vitamin E.
Onions - Including garlic, leeks and scallions - onions are a good
source of fiber, but also contain many phytochemicals, cancer-fighting
anti-oxidants that stimulate the immune system.
Olive oil - When choosing a cooking oil, salad dressing, or simply
an accompaniment to bread; olive oil is low in saturated fats and high
in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, as well as some cancer-fighting
anti-oxidants. Good alternatives for cooking include flaxseed oil or
canola oil... both with favorable fat profiles, rich in Omega-3 fatty
acids.
